There is an appealing history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, in which casino wagering is banned. Eight gambling halls are established in a generally small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and though visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling hall, features 150 slot machines and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel compound that features many comforts accompanying the gambling den, which provides 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
